This piece is saggar-fired in a base of hay and wood chips. Coloring comes from reduction firing of natural materials and metals. Accents come from oxidation-fired lead-free, ethically-sourced mineral pigments and genuine copper.
The uninterrupted, structured palate of this cylindrical piece reinforces the the theme. Muted colors and black-and-white images of women in various states of dress and activity, copper coins, and geometrically-rendered wormhole and black hole shapes combine to create an unremitting narrative on the experiences and valuations of women doing paid work.
Lower parts of the piece get a ruddy brown coloring from steel wool. Hues of blue to green are derived from banana peels adhered with kraft tape and loose cotton cordage. Inside is coated with a zinc-free clear glaze to ensure a water-tight seal.
